A Farewell to Glory: The Rise and Fall of an Epic Football Rivalry — Boston College vs. Holy Cross
It began in November 1896 when football was still in its infancy. About 500 people turned out on a soggy field in Worcester, Massachusetts to watch Holy Cross battle Boston College. That game initiated one of the great rivalries in football history. It involved some of the most famous players and coaches to ever step on a football field. In its 91 years, the rivalry spawned controversy, contention, fierce competitiveness, elation, gloom, and great moments. It was also linked to heart-breaking tragedy. In the end, the rivalry of the two Jesuit colleges, Boston College and Holy Cross, would prove to be a microcosm of intercollegiate sports. "This is a wonderful presentation of a spirited rivalry."
Edward J. King, former Governor of Massachusetts and former Boston College tackle
"Wally Carew chronicles the spirit, the excitement, the collegiality and even the occasional bitterness that defined this memorable athletic rivalry."
Reid Oslin, Boston College Sports Information Director 1974-1997
"A totally engaging history of a classic American football rivalry the players, the games, the scores and the spirit of a glorious past. But it is much more. It is a lesson about college football, student athletes, performance on the gridiron and in the classroom, the art and magic of playing a game for fun and victory. Those who once loved college football have lost a lot."
William J. O'Halloran, S.J. Vice President Emeritus, College of the Holy Cross
